Southern Railway recently transported this 325-ton nuclear reactor from Anderson to Newry siding, Courtenay, S. C. The reactor - shipped by barge, truck and rail from Mt. Vernon, Ind. to Anderson - will be part of the nuclear generation station in Duke Power Company's $700 million Keowee Toxaway power project in Oconee County, S.C. This is the second ot three reactors scheduled for shipment on Southern. The reactor was carried between two modified flat cars equipped with hydraulic devices that permitted lifting and lowering the reactor at either end to prevent it from dragging the ground when cresting hills. When finished, the Duke Power project will consist f three dams, two man-made lakes, two hydroelectric stations, the nuclear generation station and recreation areas.
