ON THE COVER Stretching far back around the turn, a Southern freight train is shown as it travels through the North Carolina mountains on its journey from Asheville, N. C., to Spartanburg, S. C. The picture was made as the great four unit Diesel electric locomotive started across the Green River bridge which is several miles west of the famous Saluda Mountain grade.
