ON THE COVER

A panoramic view of the changes brought to the roundhouse at John Sevier near Knoxville, Tenn., by the coming of the Diesel locomotive. In the far background is the oil storage tank, Ventilators sprouting from the roundhouse roof identify the stalls that have been converted from steam to Diesel maintenance. The single stall at the right of the ventilators has been turned into a machine shop for the intricate mechanical work Diesels require; additional stalls, to the left of those with ventilators, have become a new wheel shop. Along the track seen on the right in the picture are inspection, washing and sanding facilities for Diesel locomotives.
