ON THE COVER
Equipped with one of the new Air-Chimes that have the Southern's Diesels "whistling while
they work", the northbound Southerner rounds a slight curve north of the station at Fairfax,
Virginia, on its way into Alexandria, Virginia, and Washington, D. C. From Washington to New
Orleans and back, The Southerner now signals its approach with a melodious whistle reminiscent
of the mournful wail of the old
steam locomotive whistle, instead of the window-rattling "blaat" of the Diesel air horn.
