Progress at Ernest Norris Yard in Birmingham, Ala.

With grading nearly complete, the actual building of the Southern's new Ernest Norris Yard near Birmingham is going ahead at a rapid rate.

Track is being laid in various parts of the yard ( the picture shows track being put in at what will be the entrance to the yard's diesel running repair shop)

Foundations and some of the structural steel for the retarder tower are already in place. Concrete pits have been built to house the track scales. Foundations for the track underpass at the hump were being poured when Ties paid the yard a visit. Rolls of cable and other electrical equipment for the car retarders have been shipped in and located near the retarder tower. Topographically speaking, the yard is beginning to take on its final shape.

A stockpile of rail, crossties and other necessities, for further track laying has been collected near the center of the yard.
