ON THE COVER

A freight train crosses the Kentucky River rolling "high, wide, and handsome" over High Bridge on the CNO&TP between Lexington and Danvine, Kentucky. The original High Bridge was built at the same location more than eighty years ago and was replaced by the present sturdy, 1,230 ft. Iong structure in 1911. The old bridge, thirty-one feet lower than the present 308-ft. height from the low water mark of the river to the track level, was for many years the highest railroad bridge in the world.
