ON THE COVER

Fuel for industry, No, 54 on the Birmingham division's "West End" stretches as a solid train of bituminous coal from locomotive No.4100 at the yard limit board at Cordova, Alabama, to the caboose which is just passing the houses on the outskirts of the town, Engineer J. M. Acuff is at the controls; Fireman A. G. Poe is the other member of the engine crew.

This full-tonnage (5,200 tons) train had started from Parrish, Alabama, in the heart of a coal-producing region depended upon by the Birmingham area iron and steel industry as the major source of fuel for its furnaces.
