ON THE COVER

Emerging from Lookout Mountain Tunnel, just south of Chattanooga, Tenn., the Southern's Train No.42, The Pelican, on its way into Chattanooga passes a freight train headed in the opposite direction.

If a camera could record sound as well as variations of light and shadow, the sound accompanying this picture would be the melodious call of the old steam whistle. Diesel locomotive 6145 is one of the many Southern Railway locomotives equipped with the five tuned horns that reproduce faithfully the steam whistle's wail. (The horns are mounted on the right hand side of the engine cab roof.)
