ON THE COVER

Snapshot of American products, going places. There's no telling what may be rolling along behind that multi-ton chunk of diesel power. The tank cars may be full of fuel or industrial chemicals; the covered hopper car may be packed with cement or bauxite ore. Any of a thousand and one industrial products shipped by less than carload freight may be riding safely and smoothly in the box cars.

But one thing is certain, they're going places in a hurry. And all America lives better because a hundred and more years ago railroads began fitting the farms and mines and factories of a young nation with seven-league boots.
