ON THE COVER

Keeping our steel highway straight and 'smooth and free of bumps demands the constant attention of track maintenance forces on the Southern. Typical of the continuous System- wide work on our track is the alignment of rail to ensure easier and smoother riding for both our passenger-customers and the freight we carry.

In the picture, a foreman has "zeroed" in with his track transit on a marker (being held on the rail by the workman in the center) and is motioning to other workers to "nudge" the rails slightly to the right to straighten out a minor kink he has detected.
