ON THE COVER

Portrait of a man with "connections" that help keep passengers comfortable. M. E. Chaflin, car inspector, Atlanta Terminal Company, attaches the steam line from the diesel locomotive to that of the first car of Train 29 at Atlanta Terminal Station.

This train line carries steam from the locomotive's steam generator through to the end car of the train-heating the cars in winter, cooling them in summer, and generally making the interior of a Southern Railway passenger train a refuge from the elements in any weather.
