With complete dieselization in sight the Southern is keeping its employees abreast of improvements in diesel Iocomotives with the DI-2, a new diesel instruction car outfitted with the latest modifications in diesel equipment. The DI-2 replaced its predecessor, the DI-l, which is now out of date. |
As new and better diesel equipment is developed the Southern never misses an opportunity to improve its operations by acquiring the most modern and efficient diesel equipment in the field.
To acquaint its shop men and operating employees with the changes in recently-purchased or modernized diesel locomotives the Southern has built a new diesel instruction car containing the most up-to-date equipment. Named the DI-2, it replaces the DI-l which, though only a few years old, contained equipment that was largely outmoded.
The interior of the DI-2 as seen from the "pupils' " seats. In the center of the picture is a steam generator complete with operating controls and auxiliary fuel and water tanks. |

The DI-2 was built at the Southern's Hayne Car Shop, Spartanburg, S. C., from a standard Pullman car. It will seat 32 persons and is equipped with visual aids including a complete set of 16 mm. motion picture apparatus with sound and a set of slide projection equipment.
A complete set of locomotive air brake controls and equipment is fully operative and the instructor can explain all parts and their functions by actual working demonstrations. |

Already on a wide tour of the Southern, holding classes at various shop and division points, the modern mobile "schoolroom" is helping employees who work on diesel equipment to learn "what's new" in their field.
An engineer's position at a diesel's operating controls is duplicated in the DI-2. The only thing missing is a clear view down the tracks. |
