ON THE COVER
An air compressor is the "heart" of the air brake system for a diesel loco- motive and the train it pulls. Just like its human counterpart, this "heart" needs a periodic check-up if it is to give many years of useful service.
Here, D. S. Wesson, machinist at
the Southern's diesel shop at Norris Yard, and local chairman of the Inter- national Association of Machinists, reassembles an air compressor as the final step before testing this over- hauled part. Similar work goes one every day in shops all over the System where skilled men of all trades combine their talents, teaming up to keep or diesels in top operating condition.
