Bowaters Southern Opens New Mill on Southern Lines

Bowaters Southern Paper Corporation on October 9 formally dedicated a giant new $60 million newsprint and pulp paper mill located along the Southern's lines near Calhoun, Tenn. Further expansion of this great plant is already being planned.

Sir Eric Vansittart Bowater, president of Bowaters Southern and chairman of the parent British company (Bowater Paper Corporation, Ltd.) , spoke at the dedication ceremonies. Other program speakers included Governor Frank G. Clement of Tennessee and Peyton Anderson, president of the Southern Newspaper publishers Association.

Aerial view of the 1,800 acre site along the Hiwassee River where Bowaters Southern's new mill will employ 7.50 people in turning out 130,000 tons of newsprint and 55,000 tons of kraft pulp each year. Rail facilities and loading shed are at left.

Bowaters Southern arranged for a special Southern Railway train to carry its three hundred guests principally Southern newspaper publishers from Chattanooga to Calhoun. President Harry A. DeButts and Vice-Presidents D. W. Brosnan and W. M. King of the Southern were among the guests.

Assembling the special train proved something of a feat since 12 dining cars had to be provided to serve the guests lunch on the way to the plant. Close scheduling, however, made the 12 diners available with no inconvenience to passengers on regular runs.

The "Bowaters Special" waits at the plant siding to carry guests on their return trip.
