Handling No. 153 at Spencer Yard

Long before No.153 arrives at Spencer preparations are going on to "get it away" in the shortest possible time. Shortly after the locomotive passed the yard tower and the train stopped, C. A. Wagner, brakeman, "cut off" the engine which pulled away to allow a yard crew to add cars to the head end of the train.

Yardman H. C. Stout "making cut" at 47th car is from rear of No.153. These 47 cars were the "Spencer block"-off at Spencer for local placement or movement to destination on other trains of the Southern or connecting railroads.

A On right of the signal are the' freight cars from No.153 that were in "Spencer block." Pulled back by a switch engine to clear the crossover (left foreground) they will be replaced in the train by 41 cars already being pushed ahead by another switch engine on the track to the left of the signal.

A The cars being added at Spencer are on the way through the crossover and will soon be coupled to the rear of No. 153. Similar work is going the same time on the "head end."

Switch engines working on No.153. Engine 2288 has hold of the "Spencer block" and has pulled it into the clear (pictures 1 and 2). Engine 2297 is preparing to push ahead with the cars being added at Spencer (picture 3).

Ready to leave Spencer only a few minutes after the picture of Mr. Stout was made. Forty-seven cars have been taken from the rear of the train, on at 41 were added there and 17 have been added to the head end.
