ON THE COVER

Lighted by giant floodlights during the night hours, a modern Southern freight classification yard works the clock around. Day and night the trains roll in, day and night the freight cars shuttle through a web of tracks, as the cars are sorted and recombined into outbound trains. Freight can't wait-so railroads are on the job 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

What's in these freight cars? Yesterday's finished products, tomorrow's raw materials-the output of farms, forests, mines and factories. America needs them tomorrow-that's why they're moving tonight.
