ON THE COVER
Diesel engines sound a deep-throated hum of power as Southern Railway freight train No.154 climbs the ruling grade on the east end of the railway's Birmingham division.
Shown here at Iron City Hill, 16 miles east of Anniston, Ala., No.154 has completed slightly more than a third of its 1,115-mile trip between New Orleans, La., and Potomac Yard, Va.
This train and others like it in the Southern's fleet of first-class freight trains represent the finest in modern railroad freight service. Scheduled like passenger trains and with the same constant attention to assuring on-time performance, Southern's fast freights are attracting much favorable attention from shippers.
