ON THE COVER

Autumn haze gives a tapestry-like quality to this view from the top of the Washington Monument showing the Potomac River rail and highway bridges connecting our territory with Washington, D. C.

At left is the railroad bridge (that's a Southern streamliner crossing into Washington); in the center is the north- bound bridge carrying U.S. Highway No. 1 between Virginia and the District of Columbia, and on the right the south- bound bridge of that highway. Completing the transportation picture, the level stretch of land in the background jutting out into the river is Washington's National Airport.

Problem: pick the one transportation facility here not paid for by tax-dollars. If you say "railroad bridge," you're right.
