The observation platform was one of the latest features of luxury transportation when this picture was taken at Asheville, N. C., 45 years ago. This is Southern's "Carolina Special," inaugurated on January 2, 1911.

Passenger train No.132 of the Atlantic & Yadkin Railway at Mt. Airy (N. C.) Yard in 1922. The A&Y - consisting of 130 miles of road between Mt. Airy and Sanford, N. C. - became a Southern Railway System line Dec. 31, 1949, and is now operated as part of the Winston-Salem division. The men standing in front of the engine were (left to right): L. Gwyn, mail clerk; J. E. Winfrey, express messenger; R. H. Fulcher (who sent TIES the picture), then baggage master and now retired conductor; A. N. Stout, flagman; W. G. Shelton, conductor; J. H. Tunstall, engineer, and H. L. Roberson, fireman.

International Harvester Company chose Southern Railway to haul this trainful of tractors into New Orleans, La., from East St. Louis, Ill., recently-14 carloads in all. According to C. L. Whitaker, district manager at New Orleans, the company was highly pleased with its choice. "Excellent handling all the way through," he said.
