President Harry A. DeButts (left) of Southern Railway and L. H. LaMotte, executive vice-president of International Business Machines, pressed. buttons in Atlanta last month to set in motion for the first customer use anywhere an electronic brain" known as the IBM 705, Model II, Electronic Data Processing Machine.
Mr. LaMotte presented this miniature model (of the 705's console and one of the magnetic tape units) to Mr. DeButts at ceremonies marking the opening of Southern's computer center.
He hailed the Southern as a trail-blazer in the railroad industry" and as a pioneer in the use of IBM equipment
