ON THE COVER

Whether it is seen in the outskirts of Memphis, Tenn., as shown here, or making steady, rapid progress through the countryside, a Southern Railway freight train is an object of interest.

A child waving gaily to the crewmen may see it as an awesome giant-on-wheels going to or coming from strange, faraway places. A shipper may look on it with satisfaction that his goods are on their way to his customers. To most, it may inspire nothing more than a comforting feeling that their town or city is "on the railroad.

But to the country as a whole it represents an all weather, dependable, mass transportation' carrier -in short, the wheel horse of America's transportation industry.
