ON THE COVER

It takes many thousands of hands skilled at scores of occupations to keep the Southern Railway running.

Most familiar to the public is this view of a passenger train conductor's hands deftly punching a variously-shaped hole in the place provided for it on one of our round-trip card-tickets.

Based on a passenger count, this scene was repeated about 10/4 million times on Southern trains last year. As a matter of further interest, of the ticket punches used by over 10,000 railroad conductors in the United States, no two make a hole the same shape.
