The South Carolina Canal & Rail Road Company (Southern's earliest predecessor) took out this page advertisement in the Augusta, Ga., city directory of 1841 to announce its time schedule and fare reduction between Charleston and Hamburg. Note that the railroad was cautious about times of arrival, leaving the passenger to wonder exactly how long the trip would take.

This picture was taken of "The Crescent" as it sped along the line between Spartanburg and Greenville, S. C., sometime in July, 1926.
