ON THE COVER
In their journeys from origin to final destination freight cars may travel thou- sands of miles over several railroads.
Consider that about half of the nation's freight tonnage is moved by rail (and that the longer the move the more likely that the freight will be rail-borne) and you realize how greatly the welfare of the country depends upon efficient and dependable railroads.
Vital to efficient and dependable service are the terminal yards where cars are "sorted" and those going to or coming from other roads are interchanged. In the picture, a Southern engine is shown delivering a cut of cars to the Illinois Central's yard at Memphis, Tenn.
A story about Southern's Forrest Yard at Memphis, one of our railway's terminal "gateways.".
