ON THE COVER

Shortly after this picture was made at a New Orleans wharf, the oddly-shaped crate being loaded onto a Southern flat car began a journey to Birmingham.

What was in the tarpaulin-covered steel crate? A replica of the Statue of Liberty, one-fifth the size of the original, which had been cast in France and shipped to the Gulf port by boat. What was its final destination? A commanding position on top of the office building of a large insurance company with headquarters in Birmingham.

Prepared by years of experience in handling unusual shipments Southern took this one in stride. though special precautions were taken to make sure the bronze lady would have a safe and comfortable trip.
