ON THE COVER

For the fourth time in 47 years, Richmond, Va., recently had its famous three- level crossing filled with locomotives-and for the first time it was all diesel.

As they were for the past three official portraits, the trains had to be "posed." The odds against three locomotives arriving at the crossing at the same moment by coincidence are much too long to interest a photographer.

In the first portrait (1911) three high-stacked steamers "watched the birdie." In 1926, more modem steam power filled the three levels, and in 1949, it was diesels, two to one. (A detailed story of the unique crossing appeared in TIES in April, 1950.)
