Searching through the Archives of the United States in Washington, D. C., for pictures of railroads during the War Between the States, a TIES reporter happened to notice the photograph shown at right. Though the print was not identified, he felt certain that he recognized the scene and that it added a pictorial postscript to a story in TIES eight years ago. "President Lincoln's Private Car" (February, 1951) told the story of the handsome railway car built for President Abraham Lincoln but never used by him in his lifetime. Union railway officials who supervised the building of the car in the military car shops at Alexandria, Va., had invited the President to take a trial ride in the car on April 15, 1865. If TIES' reporter has speculated correctly this photograph was taken outside the car shops on the afternoon of April 14 while the car was being given a final test before the President's expected visit. But it was all in vain. President Lincoln attended a performance at Ford's Theater on the evening of the 14th. The rest is history.
