ON THE COVER

A Southern diesel rolls along with cars wheeling behind it in a line lost in the dusty haze whipped up by the train's passing.

Where? Alabama, perhaps. Or Tennessee or Virginia or Kentucky. Or any state the Southern serves. Wherever it's rolling, industrial supply lines depend on it. People depend on it to bring across the miles the things they eat and use and wear.

Keeping that train rolling-and hundreds like it-makes us partners in the building of the new industrial economy in the South.
