This handsome balloon - stacked wood - burner (owned apparently by the Atlanta and Charlotte Air - Line Railway ) pulled one of the first trains into West Point, Va. after rail service was restored to the area in 1868. The original photograph belongs to Mrs. Sue T. Martin of West Point.
Natural Tunnel, a scenic spot in Southwest Virginia was a full - fledged tourist attraction when this picture was taken around 1915. Passenger trains stopped at the pavilion in the amphitheater near the east entrance to the tunnel to give passengers a prolonged look at its natural beauty. (C. E. Burchfield, trainmaster, and P.W.
