A carload of military freight rolling down the hump into a modem classification yard (this one is Southern's at Birmingham) serves as a timely reminder of the railroads' role in defending the country.

Railroad installations are defense installations. Too - as important in their way as an army camp or a missile base. A strong national transportation system is the foundation on which all the rest of our defense depends.
