Few freight cars -if, indeed, any - have ever aroused the public's interest to the extent that Southern's "Big John" covered hoppers have.
And deservedly so.
These aluminum -body -steel -under - frame cars pioneered by our railway are helping write new chapters in the history of rail transportation by making possible drastic reductions in the costs of transportation for shippers.
The "Big John" on our cover was one of several types of Southern-designed and -developed freight cars, with which it is increasing its usefulness to shippers, that Southern exhibited at its Norris Yard in Birmingham last month to a group of important visitors.
