ON THE COVER

A multiple-car shipment of grain moves into the Ralston - Purina feed mill at Gainesville, GA, in the heart of that state's great poultry - producing area. Poultry producers in the Southeast were among those fighting at Southern's side in the long battle to permit our railroad to pass transportation cost savings along to the people of the Southeast.

Grain Transportation savings on multiples - car shipments moving within the first few days after the rates became effective on May 11 ranged from $2,600 to $4,400 per shipment of five cars.

They are typical of the kind of savings passage of the reduced rates bills - S. 1061 and H.R. 4700 - will mean for the American consumer. These bills must be passed in the public interest.
