A $600,000 expansion and improvement project is under way at the Central of Georgia Railway Company's yards in Augusta, Ga. ,
The project includes revision of grades, replacement of the existing yard office with a larger and more modern building, new car repair and inspection facilities, improved yard lighting and communications systems, drainage improvements and a paved access road and parking areas.
Southern Railway Company, Central of Georgia, and Georgia and Florida Railroad Company will make joint use of the expanded and improved yard.
Initially, capacity of the yard is being increased from the present 177 cars to 568. Further expansion to a capacity of 744 cars will be possible.
In a news story on the expansion and improvement project, the August Chronicle reported that it "was prompted by the substantial industrial growth experienced in the Augusta area during the past few years, and by confidence on the part of the three railroad involved that not only will the industrial development of the community continue indefinitely and vigorously, but at an accelerated rate."
In an editorial commenting on the project, the Augusta Herald agreed that it is indeed "far more" than just a reflection of the area's industrial growth over the past several years.
The editorial observed: "The modernized rail facilities here are a provision for future business which the railways foresee, and for which they are determined to be prepared.
"They are an expression of confidence in the future of this city and area - a confidence backed up by hard cash in a very substantial amount."
And Milton Folds, executive director of Augusta's industry-seeking "Committee of 100," was quoted by the Chronicle as saying: "This improved and enlarged facility will greatly enhance the quality of freight service available to our 'industries. ..The railroads, Folds said, "are to be complimented on taking this step."
Speaking for the three railroads, Central of Georgia President W. E. Dillard said: "We have been glad to contribute to Augusta's industrial development program by assisting in both acquisition of suitable plant sites and inducement of good industries to locate" in the Augusta area.
"We shall continue to assist," he added, "in developing fully the tremendous industrial potential of the entire Augusta area." .
