New Auto Parts Box Cars





A railroad freight car that is as long as an eight - story building is high - that the mammoth size of Southern Railway's new auto - parts freight cars. Joseph N. Todd, Jr., car designer for Southern Railway, is shown in these photographs performing a final inspection of the car - built for Southern by Thrall Car Manufacturing Company, Chicago Heights, Ill. This was the 500th car to roll of thee Thrall Company's assembly line. A total of 1,000 cars have been ordered several railroads at an approximate cost of $33 million. The special cars are designed specifically to haul automobile parts to the assembly plants of the nation's automobile manufacturers.
