Volvo Rides Autoguard Car

Volvo of America Gorp., a subsidiary of A. B. Volvo of Sweden, teamed up with Southern Railway on an experimental shipment of 18 new Volvos in Southern's new Autoguard freight car. The automobiles were brought by ship from Sweden, where they were manufactured, to Norfolk, Va. Officials of both Volvo and Southern were on hand to see the cars loaded on the Autoguard car for rail movement to Louisville, Ky. Southern hopes to use this modern auto carrier to serve the new Volvo plant being constructed at Chesapeake, Va., where the first Volvos built in America are expected to roll off the assembly lines next year. Volvo is the first foreign auto manufacturer to break ground for a plant in the U.S. The Autoguard car is a three-section enclosed car of articulated design, capable of carrying 18 full size cars half again as many as the standard tri-level auto rack car now in wide use.
