Southern Scenes

The feature shows the first picture that SR photographer Howard Olmsted took for Southern Railway. The date was June 17, 1953. Flanked by the "Best Friend of Charleston" and a four-unit diesel locomotive at Chattanooga, Tenn., Southern engine No.6330 had just finished the last regular run to be made by a steam locomotive on the Southern Railway System. The steam locomotive era on Southern began Christmas Day in 1830.

This Southern Railway freight train moving along south of Somerset, Ky., was captured in a fraction of a second by SR's photography section. Yet, the freight has a glorious past and it is rolling into a promising future. To learn more about this, see the story of the Bicentennial of Southern Railway.
