Southern Scenes The feature was taken near Front Royal, Va. The picture makes you want to turn your calendar ahead a couple of months. Southern's Tom Emmons, chief photographer, and Howard Olmsted, photographer, noticed Dogwood trees in the area several years ago and returned there last spring to capture them in blossom.

ON THE COVER Ricardo Kostner, photo assistant, made this exciting picture of a Southern diesel. He started with a black and white negative, from which he made 10 negatives of varying densities on high-contrast film. Using color filters, he then printed the negatives on color paper. Ricardo has a degree in graphic design from the University of Chile. He came to this country in 1972, and worked on the Norfolk Southern before joining Southern's photo section in Washington, DC, in 1974.
