Southern Scenes

The feature photo was taken by Ricky Johnson of Lynchburg, Va. A rail enthusiast and amateur photographer, Ricky snapped the Southern freight train on a snowy morning as it headed south through the Lynchburg station. A draftsman for a sign company, Ricky enjoys captur- ing local scenes on film.

This photograph by chief photographer Tom Emmons is a study in contrasts. In the foreground an overhead crane lifts a trailer at Southern's busy new intermodal facility in Cincinnati. In the background is the now empty Union Terminal, a passenger station completed in 1933 at a cost of $41 million.
