This feature was taken by Southern Railway photographer Howard Olmsted. Howard took the picture on the Harrisonburg branch in Broadway, Va.


The ends of two quarter - mile strands of rail welded together at Duluth, Ga., marked the completion of laying continuous welded rail on both single and double track between Washington, D.C., and Atlanta. For details on Southern's track improvement program, turn to "Southern gangs smooth the way".
