Southern Scenes

The feature shows a Southern freight train crossing the Wells Viaduct bridge near Toccoa, Ga. Completed in 1919, the bridge is 1400 feet long and stands over 210 feet tall in the middle.


ON THE COVER: Wells Viaduct, near Toccoa, Ga., is locally known as the North Fork Trestle. It is more than a quarter-mile long and 210 feet high in the middle. The reinforced concrete piers were the tallest of their kind when the bridge was completed 60 years ago.
