Southern Scenes
The feature shows the sun's reflection on a stretch of welded rail just south of Charlottesville, Va. Southern Railway installed 565.1 miles of welded ribbon rail in 1980. That included 291 miles of relay and released rail. Southern also timbered and surfaced 2,329 miles of track during the year, installing more than 1.9 million new crossties. In addition, more than 600 miles of track that did not require any crosstie replacement were also surfaced.
