ALABAMA AND MISSISSIPPI RIVERS RAILROAD COMPANY. RECORDS, 1860-64. Ran from Selma to York, Alabama (78 miles). Incorporated in Alabama (1850) to build a railroad between Montgomery and the Mississippi state line. Construction began in 1852 at Selma; railroad completed to York by 1864. Charter amended in 1864 to change the name of the railroad to the Selma and Meridian Railroad Company. Records include stockholders' and directors' minutes (1860-64, 1 vol.). ALABAMA GREAT SOUTHERN RAILROAD COMPANY. RECORDS, 1877-1932. Ran from Chattanooga, Tennessee, to Meridian, Mississippi (291 miles). Reorganized in 1877 from the Alabama and Chattanooga Railroad Company; immediately after reorganization, its entire stock was transferred to the Alabama Great Southern Railway Company, Ltd., a British company. Controlled by the Richmond Terminal Company (1890), then by the Southern Railway Company (1895). AMERICAN CONSTRUCTION COMPANY. RECORDS, 1881-89. Chartered in Virginia in 1881 to construct, equip, and repair internal improvements in Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, and Tennessee. ANNISTON WAREHOUSE AND COMPRESS COMPANY. RECORDS, 1887-1905. Incorporated in Alabama in 1887 for the purpose of compressing and warehousing cotton. Records include stockholders' and directors' minutes (1887-1905, 1 vol.). Southern Railway Archives. Ms84-005.


ARKANSAS CITY AND GRENADA RAILROAD COMPANY. RECORDS, 1872-73. Incorporated in Mississippi in 1872 to connect the Mississippi Central Railroad at Grenada, Mississippi, with the Mississippi River at Arkansas City, Arkansas. ASHEVILLE AND CRAGGY MOUNTAIN RAILWAY COMPANY. RECORDS, 1890-1941. Chartered in North Carolina in 1889 for the purpose of constructing a railroad from Asheville northeast to Craggy Mountain, North Carolina. ASHEVILLE AND NORTHERN RAILWAY COMPANY. RECORDS, 1905-39. Incorporated in North Carolina in 1905 for the purpose of constructing a railroad from Asheville northeastward to the Tennessee state line. ASHEVILLE AND SPARTANBURG RAILROAD COMPANY. RECORDS, 1881-1902. Ran from Biltmore, North Carolina, to Alston, South Carolina (134 miles). Reorganized in South Carolina (1881) from the Spartanburg and Asheville Railroad Company. Operated as part of the Richmond and Danville system (1881-94) and controlled by the Southern Railway Company after 1895. Records include stockholders' and directors' minutes (1881-1902, 2 vols.). ATLANTA AND CHARLOTTE AIR-LINE RAILWAY COMPANY. RECORDS, 1877-1913. Ran from Atlanta, Georgia, to Charlotte, North Carolina (268 miles). Reorganized in 1877 from the Atlanta and Richmond Air-Line Railway Company; perpetually leased by the Richmond and Danville Railroad (1881-94); controlled by the Southern Railway Company (1895). ATLANTA AND RICHMOND AIR-LINE RAILWAY COMPANY. RECORDS, 1870-77. Formed in 1870 by the consolidation of the Georgia Air-Line Railroad Company with the Air-Line Railroad Company in South Carolina; controlled by the Richmond and Danville Railroad. Opened from Atlanta, Georgia, to Charlotte, North Carolina, in 1873. Sold in 1877 and reorganized as the Atlanta and Charlotte Air-Line Railway Company. ATLANTIC AND FRENCH BROAD VALLEY RAILROAD COMPANY. RECORDS, 1880-82. Created in South Carolina (1878) through an act that changed the name of the Belton, Williamston, and Easley Railroad Company, which had been chartered in 1878 to connect Belton and Easley, South Carolina. Consolidated with the Edgefield, Trenton and Aiken Railroad Company in 1882 to form the French Broad and Atlantic Railway Company. ATLANTIC, VALDOSTA, AND WESTERN RAILWAY COMPANY. RECORDS, 1897-1902. Chartered in Georgia in 1897 to connect Valdosta, Georgia, with Jacksonville, Florida. AUGUSTA, GIBSON, AND SANDERSVILLE RAILROAD COMPANY. RECORDS, 1883-92. Incorporated in Georgia in 1884 for the purpose of building a line from Augusta to Sandersville. Opened on a narrow-gauge track in 1886. Sold in 1893 and reorganized as the Augusta Southern Railroad Company the same year. AUGUSTA SOUTHERN RAILROAD COMPANY. RECORDS, 1892-1917. Ran from Augusta to Tennille, Georgia (83 miles). Reorganized in 1893 from the Augusta, Gibson, and Sandersville Railroad Company; consolidated in 1894 with the Sandersville and Tennille Railroad. Leased to the South Carolina and Georgia Railroad Company (1897) and operated by the Southern Railway Company after 1897. BALTIMORE, CHESAPEAKE, AND RICHMOND STEAMBOAT COMPANY. RECORDS, 1874-1900. Incorporated in Maryland (1873) for the purpose of connecting West Point and Baltimore by steamer line; controlled by the Richmond, York River, and Chesapeake Railroad Company (1874-81) and part of the Richmond and Danville Railroad system (1881-94). BELLEVILLE, CENTRALIA AND EASTERN RAILROAD COMPANY. RECORDS, 1889. Chartered in Illinois in 1889 to connect the Louisville, Evansville, and St. Louis Railroad Company in Mt. Vernon with the Illinois and St. Louis Railroad Company at Belleville. Consolidated the same year with the Louisville, Evansville, and St. Louis Railroad and several other railroads to form the Louisville, Evansville, and St. Louis Consolidated Railroad Company. Reorganized in 1895 from the Union Railway Company and the Chattanooga Union Railway Company; controlled by the Alabama Great Southern Railroad Company after 1895. Incorporated in Virginia (1873) for the purpose of constructing a narrow gauge railroad from Danville, Virginia, to connect with the Atlantic, Mississippi and Ohio Railroad near Christiansburg, Virginia. Line built from Danville to Stuart, Virginia (1880-84). Reorganized as the Danville and Western Railway Company (1891); part of the Richmond and Danville system (1891-94) and operated by the Southern Railway Company after 1894. ELYTON AND ABERDEEN RAILROAD COMPANY. RECORDS, 1880-82. Incorporated in Alabama and Mississippi (1870) for the purpose of connecting Elyton, Alabama, and Aberdeen, Mississippi, by railroad. Charter lay unused until the Richmond Terminal Company acquired control of it (1881); consolidated in 1881-82 with the Columbus, Fayette and Decatur Railroad Company and the Georgia Pacific Railroad Company (of Alabama) to form the Georgia Pacific Railway Company.
