ON THE COVER

A froth of pink blossoms on the peach trees of the thriving orchards of South Carolina's Piedmont section is as sure a sign of spring as two boys and a dog taking to the woods and fields after a winter indoors. And a Southern Railway Diesel-powered freight train (like No.154 pictured here just west of Inman, S. C., near Spartanburg) hauling the products of fields and mines and factories is a heartening sign, the year around, that the lifeblood of a healthy economy is flowing in the steel arteries of the South.
