ON THE COVER

Since 1868, when George M. Pullman introduced the first railroad dining car, untold millions of train travelers have enjoyed the experience of dining while they ride.

Official host on Southern dining cars is the steward, who greets guests at the door and arranges for their prompt seating and serving. He does everything possible to make the Southern's passenger-guests feel "at home."

Shown here is B. A. Towery, steward on Southern train No.38, "The Crescent," as he rings up a check and pulls out a receipt to be handed to another satisfied Southern customer.
