ON THE COVER

Washington Union Station next month begins its second half century as the rail transportation center of the Nation's Capital.

Railroad-built and railroad-operated, designed for artistic appeal and ease and comfort of travelers, the terminal is representative of a day when those who served the traveling public were expected to build such "stations" from private funds, not the public purse.

As heavy taxpayers today, Union Station and other mil terminals, stand in sharp contrast to modern air terminals financed wholly or in large part from public funds" drawn from taxpayers' pockets.
