ON THE COVER
Here graphically portrayed is the 220,OOO-mile railroad system that reaches into every state in the Union.
These rail lines have, with justice, been called the arteries of this country's free - flowing commerce,
its sinews for defense.
The country can't afford "hardening" of these arteries, or any weakness in these sinews.
All of us in the United States - rail - roaders most of all - have an interest in seeing Congress help
railroads remedy what a Senate subcommittee recently labeled "the deteriorating railroad situation."
J. R. Brosnan (left), Southern's Charleston division superintendent, represented our railway at ceremonies during the centennial celebration.
